Cant believe that they are taking no responsibility for not having Marthas records - as Jackie says they should ensure they have everything they need for a consult and should have contacted your vet if they didnt - there is no excuse they could have even done it that day as with email and fax these things can be quickly resolved, failing that they should be offering you, as their client , some recompense - after all in the vet industry reputation is everthing - and now we on the forum would be wary of being referred there.
Having said that the important thing is that your fur baby is feeling better , if she is still perky and bright a few days of chill time for you all may not be a bad thing ... hugs to you all.
Hi All,
Hope you had a good xmas and new year. Martha has been doing great up until about a week ago when the smelly yellow poops started to return.
Her stools are now back to square one how odd. We've changed vets and we are waiting to settle up with out previous vets and to get the records to our new vets.
Strange how she got better on the metronidazole, I still think it might be a persistant Giardia infection, why else would it have cleared up?
She is now 2.5 kilos before eating, so she is nearly twice the cat she was, but we have to be ever so careful not to go backwards here.
Been waiting for an update was getting worried, would the vets not let you have a longer course of Metronidazole,I know all drugs can have side effects but at the moment weighing up both sides of Marthas problems it seems the lesser side to worry about than having the awful stools back again.
Hiya, well we gave a home to a 7 month old Siamese over xmas that needed to be homed too, he's such a loving little chap but very noisy bless him (and a total purr machine). It seems Martha's problem has now been transfered to him 'eek'. He's started to get yellow loose poops. We really thought she was on the mend and 'seemed' to be fixed just before we got him, as I said she is nearly twice the weight and playing, had normal poops and was much better.
I got them both straight into the new vets and explained the situation, we got metronidazole for both of them and pro-kolon as well. Poor little chap now I feel bad that we are doing our cats more harm than good! They are both playing though and happy, and enjoy sleeping on us (I just keep waking up at night checking them and cleaning the trays of poop!). I've also got some meds to treat our outdoor cat in case.
I'll post up some pictures soon when I get chance.
I think perhaps she was nearly cured, but still had some cysts in her that had not developed. I think it's the only answer as they kept sharing each others food, even though we have been trying very hard to keep them eating their own and have been strict with our hygene.
Fingers crossed!
And here she is, along with her new friend who loves laying near the fire or jumping onto our doors!

She is looking a lot better in the photos. And the Siamese boy is very handsome, I've never seen a cat walk across the top of a door before! Hope the meds help both cats now.
A quick image search on google found me an "article" on this page - scroll down half way past the real estate stuff - does the breed look familiar ? :)

Thanks Brightlight and that is funny Peter!
He loves getting up on the door which got us really worried when we were out, but we couldn't shut them in one room, and after getting him down from there many times he showed us he's fine to jump off of it! Quite an agile cat bless him.
They are both totally happy, playing, acting normal and gaining weight, poops seem to be firming up already after the metronidazole and pro-kolon so I think we should be ok :)
She's looking far more sturdy quass. I hope she is on the up and up.
I have the same problem with Jock. 2 steps forward and then one back. At least it's that way round now. His poops were fine for 2 or 3 weeks then for no rhyme nor reason he became loose again but (only) for a couple of days and is firming up again. Him and his sister at 7 months have reached the grand weight of 2.9 kg whilst the other brother is 4.5 kg. It's unfathomable and I am no where near the levels of worry I had especially since they now all have whiskers
Strange did the little one have tunny problems?
Martha is about 2.7kg's now at around 8 months, which although small is fantastic considering she was 1.3 not all that long ago.
Oh yes she is finally getting some decent whiskers too :)
Hi All,
Martha and Storm got better, however Martha again had smelly loose poops about a week ago. She is still active, playing and is now a little over 3 kgs.
We took her to the new vets, they did another scan, took more blood, and are looking at some stool samples. They were much much better, and they said her stomach, kidney, liver and intestines etc all looked fine on the scan. They couldn't pick up a murmur any more either.
They came to the conclusion because she always improves on metronidazole that she likely has IBD, they have given us a prescription diet and long term metronidazole. They will check on her again in three weeks.
We aren't worried about her any more though, as she is growing, has got massively fluffier and is really active and playful as normal. We just need to manage her diet and see if this now keeps her poops in check.
Thanks for all your comments, support and help / advice since the start of this thread :)
We will post up some more pictures of her soon.
So very pleased to read your update. I think of little Martha quite often x
Knew you could do it Martha & so pleased that dad has found you a vets that seem a lot more down to earth & practical...x
Thanks for all the comments and help / suggestions again.
Sorry it's been a while we have been so very busy!
Martha is going well, she's still on long term Metronidazole at the moment and a special diet but she is not far off of 4 kilos now and is looking much much better.
Hope everyone is doing well and all of your kitties are good :)
Wow... she is looking a stunning girl - you are a brilliant owner to keep trying and to get her looking so well. Congrats to you and Martha
Its great seeing her looking so well...x
Really pleased for you all that she is coming good. She has really bulked and fluffed up. She looks super.
I enjoyed reading about Martha. I found this thread after searching for weight gain of a Maine Coon kitten. I wanted to share my story of my kitten, as it's so similar to yours. My Maine Coon kitten was from a shelter at age 7 months. (I know he's perhaps not truly a Maine Coon, but he has so many of the characteristics, including the most important... not making my allergic husband sneeze!). He'd been in the shelter for many weeks and had chronic diarrhea just as you described (yellow and runny), his whiskers were also very broken off! The shelter tried all different things... de-worming, medications, vitamin supplements, with no results. (Fortunately they did not give up on him... I guess because he was so gorgeous!). Finally they tried a strict diet of no grains. This worked, but when we got him, he had diarrhea again. We were feeding him a dry kibble of no-grain duck. Then we tried a wet food, as this is supposed to be better anyway. This was the cure!!! Only a wet food of DUCK with NO GRAINS. Several brands are available. I think Martha might have very good results with this, and if anyone else finds this thread do try this. We were so upset that our beloved kitty might suffer with this chronic issue and for the last several months he has done really well! The tummy issue has so many potential causes, and can involve numerous tests -- many with inconclusive results -- this is an easy solution to try. You can also try a little canned organic pumpkin as a treat. Attachment 5374
Hi CriK8 - how do I pronounce this... crikey-eight? :)
How wonderful you rescued your kitty *and* managed to cure him!
He looks scrumptious. What is his name?
Is he solid black or black smoke? And are his eyes really blue or is it the photo?
Sorry for the many questions... ;)
Anna
Hi Anna, I never thought about pronouncing the user name...! I'm Christine and my cat is Caspian. He is a Black Smoke coon! How clever you could tell!
His eyes are aqua/green when he is happy and more pale yellow when he is 'on alert'. As a kitten his fur was mostly black and then the gray started to come in. And his fur kept growing! He has a big ruff now. As for the tail, I guess he was shaved (you can see his funny tail tip in the pic) because of his diarrhea at the shelter. Now his tail is draping and really like a big feather. Reading this forum here has made me realize how lucky I am that things are OK now. We've had him since Oct/Nov. just like Martha's description here. Interesting how they are similar.
Your kitties are beautiful!! Fabulous expressions.
Thanks for responding and making me feel welcome. I've not done a forum before. How fun to share cat stories and advice.
Thanks for the info. Yes he is a good looking cat! I will keep the advice you gave in mind. I've already seen a little fluctuation in the looks of the cans I give. (more moisture or less, etc.) I'm also hoping it might be a kitten thing, and now that he's older (a year) and not stressed from his difficult start to life that things will continue to get better.
Very true. The all important thing here is that we have him in the house and my husband THINKS he is non-allergenic! Therefore he is. Hubby gets quite allergic to some cats, actually most cats. After not having a cat in my life for over 20 years I am in heaven now! I did lots of research on Siberians and MC cats and they do have a reduced allergen, but scientists have not nailed down the specifics. Some Siberians are dramatically less allergenic, but there is no guarantee the offspring will be. Most people think that long hair means more allergens, but this is not true. There are many ways to live with a cat if you are allergic.
Not that clever, really. My Monty aka El Monto is black smoke too, albeit he shows more silver in his fur than Caspian does. :)
By the looks of Caspian, particularly his face and ears, I see more Siberian than Maine Coon. So I think Cooncatbob might be right.
Re the allergies... I had always been skeptical about the supposed hypo-allergenic qualities of MCs. But we have a number of friends who suffer from asthma and/or allergies, and all of them are pleasantly surprised at how little discomfort they experience when visiting our place! (We only have Coons, no other cats.)
Thanx for your kind words about my crew. :)
Thanks, I have heard about pumpkin but haven't tried it yet, I will look into it :)
So glad your kitty is feeling better too, it's horrible when you just see them getting worse and feel helpless. For a while I wondered if we were ever going to get to the bottom of it, but thankfully she is now going great. She's even bigger and more fluffy since the last pictures and is an absolute sweetie. She's now topped 4kg's and we are all really happy xD
We are continuing with the prescription diet and hoping that in the future we can control her IBD with just diet and not have to rely on the medication, but either way we are just so happy shes ok now.
All the best to everyone and their kitties :D
Well.. I know I'm bumping up rather an old post but I stumbled across it on Google and can only wish I had seen it earlier. Your lovely little Martha must have been from the same litter as my girl (I think I even recognise her from visits :) ), if not, then the litter after as I know this was the breeders last ever litter.
I'm so glad that Martha is on the up, we too had months and months of problems with our girl - not too dissimilar to yours, but ours was diagnosed with pancreatitis which has now thankfully completely cleared (touch wood!) for over 6 months. Her weight and general growth from when she came home to us and about 6 months ago was poor to say the least and we felt completely helpless! It felt at times like we were stuck in loop of her being better, putting on weight.. and then she'd come down with another bout of illness and she'd lose weight again, so I completely feel for what you've been through!
We didn't contact the breeder (although she now knows about the pancreatitis) as I never for one moment thought it was anything that was her fault (and still don't, for the record) but sounds like she did an amazing job in your case which I would never have doubted her to do - our gang went back to stay with her this May for a week and she was SO pleased to see how well our girl had come on since last year :) a real shame she no longer breeds as I'd go back in a heartbeat if/when the time comes to add another MC to our bunch. Marthas crazy fur is exactly how Pyrrha's was... She's impossible to groom, lol!
Keep in touch, you're the first fellow Elyskats owner I've stumbled across :)
Thanks so much for the post and I am also very sorry for bumping a thread that is now years old and not replying sooner! I had been meaning to come on here for some time, but time goes so quickly!
We are glad that your little one is doing well, Martha grew to six kilos and is a giant fluffy cat, we thankfully managed to stop the medicine and control her diet.
It took lots of trials with different foods but I wanted to post back and say that Porta 21 is the ONLY food she can seem to eat without having an upset. We tried lots of expensive medicated food and none of it worked.
She does have a few health issues, (possible polyups, she has sneezing fits) probably due to the stunting and poor start she got off to, but she is mostly a healthy cat now with the diet she is on and is living an active and happy life :)
I know exactly what you mean about the fur, Martha's is so long it nearly drags across the floor.
Thanks again to everyone on this forum for helping us out, giving us advice and listening to us when we needed help. We will try to visit here more often :)
Hope all of your kitties are well :)
And here are a few pictures to show where she was and how she is now, the last couple are a bit dark sorry.
I've just re-read the thread and can't believe how far she has come and how worried we were about her. You wouldn't ever think she was the same cat in those early pictures.
Oh and I forgot to mention, here is our new addition to our family :) Meet Kali, she is a cute little moggie and is around 10 weeks old now but was closer to 8 in this picture :)
Hi, I was browsing the forum and came across your thread. Not sure if it's at all relevant but I have a 7 year old mc who had similar problems to Martha for the first four years of his life. He had bouts of diarrhoea, sometimes with sickness and generally feeling very unwell, even needing hospitalisation and a drip on one occasion, then it would clear up (usually with antibiotics and trips to vets). We noticed it kept recurring at times of stress e.g. when he'd been at the cattery or if we had lots of people over. We thought ibd/pancreatitis etc but after our vet took the initiative to do some extra blood tests he was diagnosed with recurring campylobacter. He was given specific palatable antibiotics and it cleared up completely within a few days and he has been free of it ever since.
I am so happy Martha is ok now as I know how distressing it is to have a sick cat and not know the cause. I hope you have also managed to find a vet you can trust now too.
