1st trip to vets...

Took Storvenn and Loki to the vets today so a check up and to ask some advice on worming, de-flea'ing and nail clipping.
Didnt go too badly to be honest. Both went into their carriers without too much of a fuss & the trip to the vets is thankfully only about 5-10 mins.

Once in the vets 'examination room', for want of a better description, Storvenn proceeded to eat kitty treats one at a time whilst being examined. He was really good about it and although he needed to be held still a few times, he didnt attempt to remove skin from anyone even when being given his worm tablet.

How can a cat be sooooo damn hard to hold! I had front legs gently held, backside was pushed against me so no way to go there and yet she wriggled out!
I adopted the kitty treat distraction plan. Failed.
In the end the vet demonstrated a way to hold them, hard to explain, without too much fuss. This was a lot easier, but still hard to keep a hold.
We did manage to get her de-wormed too though :)

End result - two cats in tip top condition.
Learned some bits:
Nail clipping. If not done, claws can end up curving around in a circle towards paws in older cats. Best to get them used to it at a young age rather than a 15lb cat being introduced to something new...
De-fleaing. We were advised that its pretty optional for us as we arent letting them outside yet and they arent coming into contact with other cats.
Storvenn likes keyboards. He managed to enter his own weight into the vets pc as 2.444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444 44444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444 4444444444444444444444444444444 :)

Whilst out in the waiting room (we were waiting for an estimate to have them chipped / spayed etc in 6 weeks time) they very quickly got the attention of all the staff behind the desk and absolutely everyone waiting for them!
I can almost imagine them sat there purring thinking.. "yea.. Thats right. See this coat, these paws n claws.. This is 100% prestige Maine Coon". :rofl:

I think the trip was more traumatic for me than it was for them both. Really not looking forward to dropping them off for "chips n snips", but I know its for the best. :sad1:

Oh yea and one MAJOR tip... (still cant believe I did this..)

Whilst in a vets waiting room. do not, under any circumstances turn to your beloved coonie in its carrier and say in a loud voice "dont worry, you're getting chopped up rabbit tonight!" because the young girl sat with her mum opposite you just might have her pet rabbit with her that you didnt notice....

Oh yes folks.. I was debating wether I could fit inside the cat carrier at that point. :embarrassed:

Thanks for the tips Tomiam. Really got to start clipping Hanks claws soon, probably need to de-stress before doing it as I dont want him to freak out as soon as I get the clipper out. Ive always had this fear of a cat climbing up my face and probably gouging my eyes out! So gotta learn how to relaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx so he doesn't 'feel' the tension.

Glad to know that both are in great condition, gonna ring the vets tommorow and arrange an appointment too, we were going to do it on Monday but with all of us being sick we gathered that it's not such a great idea at the moment.

Hank loves the keyboard too. He's a bugger for putting NumLock on mine and turning the thing off while Im on it! But cant help but laugh.... for now.

Also gave Hank rabbit tonight, I was poking and proding the mince to make sure all is even then realised that there was a mass amount of fur in it, which made me swear up to high heavens followed by 'EUUUUGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!" kids came running in to see what was the matter, and when they looked in the bowl... it was followed with more 'EUGGGHHHHH thats nasty mum!!!'

That poor girl in the waiting room, how could you?! She'll probably have nightmares tonight... poor thing! :sad1:

Anyways, he loved it and finished a bowl of meat for the first time. So a big thumbs up from him!

OOoooo fur in the mince.. nice /gulp.
We were gonna go for the rabbit, but when we got back the chucky tuna chunks got first turn as they had already been left out to defrost. 10/10 on them.

Good to know the raw samples are going down well with Hank too. I must admit I had a little bit of a reservation over how much they would actually eat. Seems those reservations may be unfounded. :)

One thing I have noticed too. If there is a bit of a chill on the food, ie: its just come out of the fridge, then they arent so eager to eat it when compared to sticking it in the microwave for 30 seconds to take the chill off / leaving it out to warm at room temp. Obviously if it goes in the micro, then I make sure no bones are left in.
Not too surprising really when you think about it, i just hadnt tis all.

I learnt a tip from the vets as well

the serious one is when they don't want to go in the box and you are being ripped to shreds, backwards is the way!

the less than serious one, when you have the heavy cat in a heavy box, don't hold it out in front of you whilst you twist your back getting through the door, it may just do in your back :sad1:

I've never thought about clipping nails. Our moggies haven't needed them done and Gryfn will be allowed outside into the shadehouse where he will have access to a "tree"
