Declawing...
During my browser based journey of maine coon information searching, I noticed quite a few mentionings of de-clawing. I can understand that people may not want their furniture scratched etc but come on, then don't buy a pet. Personally I think de-clawing is a very cruel in-humane act. To be honest I don't even like seeing dogs, rottweilers for instance that have had their tails snipped.
Despite owning several cats, it was only when I started looking at various web sites that I started seeing declawing options being mentioned and admit found it quite shocking that this practice is allowed.
In the UK declawing is considered animal abuse and is illegal, I certainly hope other countries follow suit.

Its great to know that California has finally banned the de-clawing of cats. I saw a program a few months ago about it, and most cat owners that do this to their cats are the ones who usually sees cats as a 'nice' accesory to their home, and obviously do not care about their cats welfare, as long as they do not destroy their lovely leather sofa or suede furnishings. It's a shame that some humans still views pets as accessories and not living beings, unbelievable how it's still legal in some American states.

As far as I know, in Belgium it's illegal as well. And I'm glad that it is! I just wish it would be considered illegal everywhere. A cat without claws isn't a cat anymore.

oh no:mad: cats were born with claws! they need them! I know we are all different and all have opinions, I used to post on another board, I mentioned something about lissa and got bombarded with "you shouldn't do that" I allow my cats out:) if you keep yours in then thats fine, but my 2 go out, we live in a very quiet area, no main roads at all, they don't go far, one, kassie, she like to roam the field at the back of our house, and often brings me "presents" what would she do with no claws?? the other, lissa, the silver one, well lets just say she is different! she brings me, socks, slippers, children's toys, once even a cot blanket lol she hasn't once brought in a dead animal, she is so funny, temper to die for! at one point everything she brought me was pink! now she is not bothered, any colour, any size! do any of yours bring you odd things??

I recall visiting my Aunt in New Hampshire a few years ago and she had just got 2 Persian indoor cats. I was horrified when she told me they had been declawed as I had never heard of the practice!!!
I'm glad to report that declawing is also illegal in Ireland!
