Extraordinary cats

Having never owned a MC before only moggies I am simply amazed at how different they are to other cats not just in looks but in character. I thought I'd share with you what I think is extraordinary about Simba. Firstly probably being the only one on here that has and been able to give Simba his freedom is he simply hasn't taken it. He has freedom to come and go while I'm around and during the day but at night or if I go out the cat flap is locked. He has quickly learnt that going out the cat flap is not always possible and so doesn't try even if it is open but instead cries at the back door to be let out like the dogs do. It is never locked for him to come back in though obviously and so he never hesitates about using it to come in. He will only ask to go out if the dogs or someone else is out there. Being a smoker I go outside to smoke and on several occasions during the day will go out with my cup of tea. The dogs have learnt to recognise the sound of me making a cup of tea to the point of knowing when I'm adding the milk (which means I'm ready) and no matter where they are or what they are doing they run to the back door to come out with me. Simba seems to have picked up on this too and is often waiting in line to do the same. When I come in the dogs follow and so does Simba if not immediately I can guarantee after a couple of minutes he is through the flap back inside. The furthest he has ever ventured is on the back fence looking out across our field. He has only ever once jumped down into the field and that time he got stung by stinging nettles so maybe that put him off. He has his few favourite hiding places in the garden but mostly he likes to sit on a bench watching the birds. During the day he will often follow me around the house if he is not sleeping. If he is bored he will walk around making a peculiar noise until someone pays him attention or he will annoy the dogs so that they get up and play with him. He appears to me to be very dog like. I'm not sure whether this is because he is growing up with two dogs or this is simply what MCs are like. I have never owned a cat like him before.. Other cats I've owned have gone out and explored and then sometimes you don't see them all day until they want something to eat. Simba seems only to want to be with us or the dogs and is not interested in going across the fence. His breeder did say to me once that he probably won't go any further than our garden but I didn't think that would be the case. He really is the most extraordinary cat :koolkat:

:LOL: Louie is much the same, Holly goes off at 6am so off down the stairs goes one sleepy human 2 dogs & Louie the dogs get there food while Louie sits & waits at a safe distance from Holly as she has been known to shower him in drool :drool1: nice, then he has his 1st food of the day, there is wet food out all the time but we feed him his dry separetly as Scutter is not allowed normal dry food as a stone former so cant leave it out all the time.

Our old MC used to go out in the days of house with garden he never went very far usually you could hear him chirping away to himself, he always brought things back he had stalked & killed kids toys or fat balls he had nicked out of next doors tree so there was always alot of things to return good job they were nice people next door :LOL:

The last house we were at had the garden cat proffed as to near roads but it did'nt seem to bother Milo he just liked being out hunting ferocious things like lady bugs :rofl:

Louie spends most of his day in the yard here but he prefers it when its raining, he also seems to prefer spending time with the dogs but loves to play with the fussy lot when they bother to scrape their tails off the bed.

They are undoubtedly unique creatures and their characteristics seem similar, how many times has someone started a thread on the forum and it's followed by several of us saying "yeah mine does that too " Like Karena, I'm new to MC's but having researched the breed before his arrival I must admit to being a bit sceptical about some of their antics such as their liking water for example.

Karena is right they have a lot of characteristics that are more in liking to a dog but I don't think it's because they share their home with dogs Harry's never even met one ! When I did have dogs, they used to sit outside the room (usually the loo) until you came out and Harry does the same. Infact if you don't quite shut the door he's in there with you.

Don't get me wrong Poppy (my moggie) has her own little traits but at the end of the day is a totally free spirit, if she doens't want to do something, or listen to you she will play deaf and go on and do her own thing. If he's upstairs and i can't find him, I call and he answers, usually followed by thuds coming down the stairs to see what I wanted.

They certainly are extraordinary :)

Isn't their dog like behaviour the reason we choose MC's,I didn't want to be in the position of having another cat adopted by our "do good neighbour"who always swore she didn't entice him in but we would lay in bed & hear her call him in for his fresh chicken,we couldn't compete with that in early marriage days,I also didn't want to have to go & pick a little body up from the side of the road like the second little moggie thats why I said no more cats but having seen how my friends MC behaved knew that was the reason why they are happy to be if necessary indoor cats.They are just so people minded & playful but very often in that doggie way that you know you can keep them very happy pussies,even if it is leaving the sink tap running{forget about the water meter spinning round}& let them just have water running all over their heads,down their necks & then when they are sopping wet want a nice kiss please mum.
Daughter had a MC then got a puppy,after the puppy ate it would go out for a wee be told it was good & get a tit bit,Crystal started coming half way down stairs put her head through the bars & started wailing,took daughter two days to realise it was after she had used tray so then had to start telling cat she was a good girl & give her a titbit,what characters we are all living with & as stated extraodinary cats but thats why we luv em...

Yep, absolutely agree, but it's also true what they say one isn't enough ! ;)

This is all really intereting , my partner and I are having discussions on freedom or not when we finally get ours. Reading about them I believe that so long as we are home they would never wander far. He says yes but huge cat in neighbours garden may not be happy neighbour! I would so like to be able to watch them play outside whilst sitting with coffee.

Umm yep Harrymc,as both daughter & myself have found out to our cost,hard to believe though that they all tend to have same traits but the individual characters of each can differ so much,once again the reason why we luv em,couldn't imagine our home without them,will just have to keep working while we still have six wanting to be fed {plus daughters two at the moment as well} I love watching peoples faces when they come round,we always warn that there are cats about & then watch the response as they appear.

There's no reason why you can't, Harry plays for hours in the garden, we have blocked it off and there isn't anywhere he can climb to get out, not that he's ever tried, he likes to have us in his sights. I don't think MC's are real jumpers, at least Harry isn't and tends to climb up to things in stages. With the summer coming there was no way I was going to shut him up in the house and the harness is good but not necessary in the garden. :smile:

We are the same as Harrymc,have garden fenced in back & when we are at home they play out there all the while,I invited someone round last year who thought it was cruel keeping them the way we do but once she saw the fun both cats & we have she had to agree that they were all happy cats,word of warning though you have to be quick to beat them to the sunbed,they seem to be able to judge at which point they can beat you to it,curl up & then look with half an eye open that says " I have been here all morning you can't make me move ".I have spent many an hour sitting on the little wall with my drink....
Cats 1 owner 0 !

Harrymc,if ever you are up our way you would be welcome,wouldn't have to warn you not to dress up because of the possibility of cats hairs...

It's been fun reading everyone's post. Seems like they are all very similar whether you have dogs or not then - I was beginning to think Simba thought he was a dog :LOL:. I don't think they're worried about not being able to wonder far and so would be fairly easy to deter from leaving a garden. Simba could leave our garden quite easily if he wanted but chooses not to. I think as was said earlier they are people cats and like to stay near to their families. Because of this is why they also make great house cats for people without gardens or on busy roads - they just love being around us and are easily entertained. Great cats all round really and simply beautiful too:smile:

Yes, Gryfn follows me around the house and whenever I come out of the toilet he is sitting there waiting for me, and he cries when i go in the bathroom and I've closed the door on him... :rofl:

Because our cat run is out of the laundry door down the side of the house, I sit on the steps and have my coffee while watching the cats play. It really is peaceful and relaxing.
But I've also noticed that even though the door is always open to the run while we are home they like to be inside with me, and if I go and sit out there and have my coffee they will always go out and play.

I laughed this morning at gryfn... every day we are up at about 6.30 to get ready for work, except for sunday... this morning Charlie wanted to play at 6.30, but Gryfn knew it was sunday and sleep in and just stayed at the end of the bed... charlie had to go back to bed... :rofl:

and he's definately my cat.... I am the only one he will lie on my lap, but he always asks before coming up. and he will curl up at my feet rather than anyone elses...
But the other day dh was ignoring him watching tv, so Gryfn gave him a belt around the ear as though to say pay attention to me not the tv... would have loved to ahve seen it.

well I had to laugh this morning.... Gryfn knows which days I have to work....
This morning he was trying to get me out of bed at 6.30 by walking and smooching me, and then he tried to pick up my glasses...whether he was going to run off with them or give them to me I don't know... :rofl:

But it really was... hey mum time to get up....

He is a great alarm clock then :rofl:

Simba made me laugh today. The dogs were eating their dinner and Simba asked to go out so I opened the back door but he wanted to wait for the dogs to come too and sat in the doorway but I told him to either go out or come in as I wanted to shut the door and so he hopped out and I closed the door. A minute later Elsa finished her dinner and went to the back door to be let out. As I opened the door I saw Simba sitting their looking at the door waiting for the dogs and as Elsa went to go out he jumped up on his hind legs, slapped her round the face and ran off into the garden! Cheeky Monkey :rofl:

Lol Ahhh bless, poor Elsa :)
