I intend to get my cat microchipped but I'm wondering when should I get it done?
Except for our house cat, all my cats were already chipped when I got them. They got their chip at the same time as their second vaccination (at the age of 12 weeks).
You can chip your cats any time you want, but they say it's easier when they're still a kitten (the skin of a kitten isn't so tough as an adult cat's skin)
Our kitten will be microchipped, neutered and vaccinated by the time he comes to us. His breeder does it. She asked if we wanted him microchipped at the same time he is neutered as he will be under anaesthetic it would be easier on him, so I said yes.
Thank you both for your replies.
I don't intend to get Winston neutered until March but getting him microchipped at the same time might be a good idea
Awww that's so young to be neutered. Though I do understand the choice of some breeders to neuter kittens before they move to a new home, I'm not a big fan of it... They're only babies... Especially for maine coons I prefer to wait longer before they get neutered, at about the age of 10 months to 1 year of age is perfect for me. Our house cat and oriental shorthair were 6 months old when they were neutered.
We phoned the vets and they said 6 months would be an ideal age for Hank to be neutered and they also do a 'deal' of microchipping and neutering at the same time. So I think we'll have him done at that age.
But we will be taking him to the vets on Saturday just to have him checked out to make sure that all is well.
I heard that 6 months would be ideal for all cat breeds except for maine coons. Because they're such big cats, it would be better to wait a little longer than that if possible (it has something to do with the kneecaps; but I'll have to look it up). So that's why we like to wait a little longer before neutering our maine coons.
My kitten will be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before he comes to me at 12-13 weeks.
The breeders in Australia only sell entire kittens to registered breeders.
I have to say I was very surprised too when the breeder said he would be neutered before he comes but she said her vet has been doing it in cats that young for 20 years and assures me it is OK. I am having my bitch spayed on Friday and she is a year old. I'm OK with it though at least he will be able to recover in somewhere he knows well and with his mum and siblings.
