Can anyone tell me roughly when to expect shedding to start? At the moment I'm getting little cotton wool type puffs left around the house. Is this the start?

Some of mine seem to shed all year round but I would guess that the cotton wall type balls are the start of shedding for you. I definately find more undercoat than top coat around the house and in the run areas and this normally lasts for a couple of weeks. I tend to find that if I groom them more at this stage it doesn't seem to last as long!
As it warms up you'll start to find little piles of hair around....

I might be a few days late with this...
lol, nice one ! Harry seems to shed all year round, I regularly brush him and that keeps it down a bit but wearing black (which I do quite a lot) is a nightmare !
Bloomin heck I get a load out of some of mine but that is a heap of fur laying there, think we should get someone to spin it & put it to good use...
Mine all shed in different ways & at different times so need a good hoover all year round, luv it when we go away for a week, what no cats hairs in your morning cuppa,luverly..
@claudel HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a LOT of fur....
Good grief Claudel!! Is that the result of the furminator thingy you have there? I'm now 'dreadin' the shreddin'. I recently bought a furminator lookalike called a Furbuster from TK Maxx for £5.99 - thought I'd give that a go if things get a little hairy. I'm now having second thoughts!!
Yeah, I used the Furminator on MC Bubba (RIP) twice about two weeks apart...
He had an amazing amount of hair to begin with. When I got him from the pound he looked as if he'd never
been brushed and I had to have his belly shaved to get rid of the incredibly dense mats he'd grown.
It definitely got rid of a lot of hair, but I didn't like the way it left his coat so I quit using it after that.
OTOH, MC Elvis absolutely loves the brush and I give him a going over every day or so which keeps the loose hair to a minimum.
I have to trim the occasional small mat out of the thick parts, and it definitely is something I'd be more careful about if there was
an intention to show him but his shedding is nothing that the Dyson can't cope with.
I see more loose hair around the house from Coco the Calico shorthair than from Elvis but I can't catch her to brush her and I'd need armor anyway....
