About a week ago Darcy started dropping hunks of fluff everywhere. Her fur falls off in tufts. We've had her for over a year but last year she never shed like this when fall was approaching (but she was sick with intestinal issues which being grain free fixed her of)
She's got no bald spots and her fur feels baby fine and super soft. Is anyone else's MC dropping fluff like mad?
My boys are shedding quite a bit and the fur gathers up in balls on the carpet. Brushing is the answer... I think. I have enough hair after brushing to make a fourth cat...
I have never known it so bad as this year for shedding coat,Merlyn is leaving it in great big clumps & I am also combing it out of them all in fistfulls,even Bruce who never normally shed much coat is joining them this year but I also did wonder if it was due to him being so poorly & the coat had got out of condition.I normally end up getting the cleaner out at least twice a day now to track all the fur down. Can we do something constructive with it all ? I have a niggle at the back of my mind that somebody did have their MC's coat spun & made up into something but then that could be me just have been dreaming about all the piles off it that goes into the bin...
Yes our house is resembling a duvet stuffing factory at the moment! I did know someone that had her collie dogs fur made into a jumper so I think it would be possible to do the same for a maine coon. Think it was quite expensive to have it spun into wool though.
They’re shedding like there's no tomorrow over here as well. I heard someone say it’s because the weather has been so variable… cold one week, warm the other.
On the Dutch MC forum someone suggested we collect all the Coonie fur and donate it to make little jumpers for the poor shivering Sphynxies. Now that I call charity.:LOL:

In Oz they are shedding like mad as well - I find the slicker brush is brilliant for getting the clumps out of any carpet or off of scratching posts. My brown tabby is dropping it absolutely everywhere but a quick slicker across the carpet and it is like new
I too am brushing off giant tufts of fur! It's mad!! I was really worrying something might be wrong but I keep checking her and no skin irritation or anything. I think it must be the weather. We've had a crazy hot summer and then about 2 weeks ago it got cool and now bounced back up to hot and on Monday will only be in the 70s! So we're definitely having up and down weather here.
I say we all save our MC fluff. I can spin fiber into yarn LOL

Yes I think I'll spin up something with a drop spindle and email a friend who has a hairless cat and see if she wants a sweater for him. If I card the hair and get it into bunches I think it would spin well and then after it's spun it will be washed.Quote:

I took a tip from my ex-neighbour and wedge the some of the hair into the joints at the top of the garden fence. Birds come along and take it for their nests apparently.
Yep they do but only certain types it seems, if I had just hoovered around then came into the roon & saw a lump of fur I would just open the window & let it go,mostly it caught up on a bush just under the window,a few years ago I noticed a small bird collecting the fur but what amazed me was the fact that he picked through it,Bruces top coat was a no no but his underneath fur,obviously a lot softer was what the bird was after,he would get some in his beak & take it to another branch then go back & sift through more once again taking the softer fur to add to his "wanted"pile,then when he had a good beak full of he flew with his gains,since then a lot of others have come for their nest lining & they all pick out the softest fur,this year though I think we could have provided lining for every nest in England with still plenty to spare.....!Quote:

I've come to the conclusion that Maine Coon Cats turn food into Fur and Poop.
One time I took Samantha to the groomer's and since it was getting to be summer I asked for them to thin out her coat, when I came to pick her up the girl was literally covered with Samantha's fur, there was also a humungous pile of fur on the table but Samantha didn't look any different.

I've been distracted recently and haven't been on here as much as I should, but came on tonight to ask for advice about excessive shedding and fur growth - so glad I''m not alone.
Buddy started shedding his summer coat and growing his winter one; then the weather changed and he started shedding the thicker one and growing the summer one back; then the weather changed etc ....
I was starting to really worry that it was stress due to recent events but seeing this thread I now assume that everyone is having the same problems.
I'm still just using normal cat brush and slicker 3 times a day and can't believe that he isn't bald with the amount of fur that has come off him ..... he seems furrier than ever x
