It's been a while.

Hello!

So it's Chiyo's 1st Birthday on Wednesday and I realized I haven't posted on here since Chiyo came home! It's been a busy year for our house. My little Chiyo came home and I was with her for a month before having to move to Ireland for a new job. She's living at home with her daddy so I only get to see here on the short weekend when I can make it over. I'd bring her with me but right now I'm not living in a flat suitable for her and haven't found anything better so best for her to stay with Dad until he can get a job in Ireland too. So here I am saying finally Hello again and looking for some advice. She's been amazing very well behaved and a joy to have but two minor niggles. Trying to cut her nails she really isn't a fan and I was wondering if people had any tips? I've tried treats after she lets me cut at least some but she's not getting the idea and still struggles. Also sometimes she plays nice but she occasionally pulls out the claws and accidents happen while we don't encourage her to play with hands things can go wrong with toys any way to help her understand claws are bad for us but paws are ok?

Welcome back! Buzz and Baxter do not like to have their nails clipped by us either. It's baffling as they are happy to let us hold and play with their big, furry lovable paws. We have resorted to a monthly trip to the groomers. It takes her just a minute and they have never been anything but proper gentlemen. I think the groomer doesn't believe they are unruly, wiggling ruffians when we try clipping nails at home. :LOL: Maybe they just enjoy a good manicure.

When OH gets the occasional scratch while playing, he stops playing immediately (usually because he's running to the medicine cabinet for a bandage). It doesn't happen as often now that OH has gotten better at reading when they are becoming over stimulated. The only time I get attacked is in bed. Buzz is a feet cat and stalks ours when they are under the covers and we are sleeping. A rude awakening for sure. Not sure how to stop that behavior but it's part of what makes Buzz special and so I have to admit we have not tried very hard. Best thing we can do is keep those claws trimmed. :winkwink:

Oh, forgot to say - Chiyo is BEAUTIFUL!

I always handle my cats paws & toes from day one, most MC's actually enjoy having the tootsies tickled & will even wrap their paw round your finger which I find rather endearing as it leads on to them just putting their paw out & holding you,Shimba is our best hand holder..... That is why I also say from when you first get them up end them onto your lap push out each claw & even if there is nothing to cut back go through the motion so they get used to it, I have always made a game of it,sorry to sound so pathetic but I start off playing this little piggy as I do each one & inbetween cutting I tell them how good they are & give them a blow behind the ear & kiss the top of their head so all in all it turns into a bonding match rather than a struggle which with 10kg + boys is an advantage.... don't show her that it is something that needs to be a power struggle becaus efor sure as heck they will win,try sitting her upended on your lap & just play with her feet for a while & at the same time make a fuss of her if she starts to struggle just give her paw another quick play & let her go when she seems to accept that better then clip a nail & straight away tell her she is a good girl & more kisses on top of the head,if she is happy do another one if not let her go & take it up again the next day....the thing with a cat is never to let them have the last word so however quick "your" last action is it must be just that,you saying she can go down not her....our first girl who was adult was a nightmare but it wasn't long before she would be at the chair before me if I got the nail clippers out,with the playing with claws out I have always found a gentle tap on the foot a no & remove the toy which has caused the problem helps if it is your hand she gets again a no claws in please & walk away,they soon learn that claw out gets nothing in the play stakes.....The strange thing is people tend to think if someone hangs onto the cat while another tries to do it they will eventually win but the opposite is actually true,they feel threatened so a one to one quiet with them can very often reap more rewards....{but of course not always}...!!!!! Xx
