    We have so little rain in Phoenix that it is exciting to see the lighting rolling across the desert. It is beautiful and wild! Of course, it is best to be safely inside while watching the show. Have you ever seen heat lighting? Now that is interesting.

    Well...I wasn't 100% right on my statement above, but close, read on;

    Is Florida really the lightning capital of the world?

    What Newcomers Need to Know

    Almost. That title actually belongs to the African country of Rwanda, which has 2 1/2 times the lightning strikes we have in Florida. Florida has another title. It is the lightning capital of the United States. And Central Florida -- from Tampa to Titusville -- has the added distinction of being called "Lightning Alley."
    Because of the frequency of electrical storms, our state leads the nation in fatalities and injuries caused by lightning. Even if you combine all other types of storms in Florida, lightning -- which is three times hotter than the sun -- remains the No. 1 cause of weather-related deaths.

    Chris, They are very exciting to witness, as long as you are a safe distance away! I have seen large and small tornadoes personally and have been fortunate enough not to be effected by their wrath. Have you ever heard of storm chasers? They follow storms around the US and collect data. Now that must be a real exciting job!!!
    Whyemier, I wonder how many of the lightening deaths are golphers? Is it the lightening or the tree that falls on them that kills them? Either way it is very horrible :( I love to lay in bed and listen to the thunder and rain. As far as camping goes, I prefer a nice hotel with clean sheets and a hot tub!
