As far as I know, a smoke can be any color (black, blue, silver, red) but the color is only present in the top part of the fur. The lower 3/4 of each hair lacks pigment. You can see it when you brush the coat in the opposite direction - the white becomes visible underneath the black/blue/red/silver.
But please, anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm... okay. I guess it's hard because I know I saw some other people SOMEWHERE (not necessarily on this site) talk about "silvers" as though they were less of a specific color and more of a category... But what you said sounds like it makes sense, so thank you! :)

Genetics 101
Thanks Chak78. I really liked the second link you gave... I can't say I FULLY understood it all, but the geek in me read the entire thing :suprised:. I have no background in genetics at all, but I definitely found it quite interesting and now I feel like I just took a science class.
Isn't it so amazing how much goes into the color patterns of our kitties? And we thought it was just cute that they happen have that spot here or that stripe there. It's so much more! :koolkat:

Thanks Kingedmund, I did a lot of searching because we really wanted a solid blue boy and didn't know how they came about. It was a bit of a read, eh?! Thats why I liked the first link, cos if you're looking for a kitten, you can work out the possibilities from the chart. If there's stuff you're not sure about (like me!!) but want to ask, I'm sure there are a few knowledgable guys on here who can help!
Best wishes,
Chak

i find colours and genetics very tricky to work out but i am getting there.
my 'smoke onthewater' is a black smoke with white and we have a black smoke without white kitten..we also have another kitten which i thought was black smoke but may possibly be solid black, it is very tricky at the moment but i will watch over the next few weeks to see how things develope
black smokes are some of my favourites, i love the colour contrast:koolkat:
