Hi there! have you tried the site called preloved? thats where I found my kitten.
You can look for one near to you so you can go check it out before you part with
your money. My boy is not a pedigree but I met both his parents and his
siblings and it was not difficult to tell that they were maine coons, not moggies being passed
off as MCs. These were big cats with lovely laid back temperaments.
Good luck with your search and let us know how you get on

Contact the Maine Coon Breed Society or the Maine Coon Cat Club - they usually have cats needing to be rehomed for a number of reasons:

No luck from any of the shelters/rescue centres I've emailed so far. Apparently Maine Coon's are just too loveable for anyone to give away! Hoping i'll find one on Preloved or something like that now, i'm nothing if not determined!

    Oh, I don't mind paying.

I just figured it'd be best to look for a rescue cat or something first.

I think i'd still find it tricky to pay the £350+ that some people ask, given that i'd be buying all the cat stuff at the same time, but I shall wait and see, I guess!

Hi! I was looking for over a year for a rescue maine coon and I agree that they are very hard to find. Eventually I found a lady in Nottingham that runs a very small pedigree rescue and she does sometimes have maine coons (not at the moment though). We got our Mufasa from her, he was one year old and was in a bad state when he came in with his sister. He is a fine two and a half year old strapping lad now who weighs 23lbs! It may be worth keeping an eye on her site (Thorneywood) and the Rushden one (links below). Although they are both titled Persian rescue's they both have maine coons and other pedigree breeds:

CATS FOR ADOPTION - Thorneywood Cat Rescue

    and

    RUSHDEN PERSIAN RESCUE

    Good luck!

I don't know what's available in the UK but across the pond we have
    Maine Coon Rescue
    we also have pet finder.com
Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder
There seems to be a lot of Maine Coon mixes available, not sure how much Maine Coon blood they really have, since MCC are desirable some rescues will list any long haired moggy as a Maine Coon mix to up the odds of them getting adopted.
If you go this route, read up on the MCC traits before you go to look and kitties.
Where I live in Northern California there a purebred rescue that has lots of wonderful purebred cats including MCCs.
