    Genealogical Reprobates

    This covers several cousins and family branches, been awhile since I read the book, yes there was a book by a family member and a reprint by this family member.

    Most names have been forgotten, my poor memory, not to protect the non-existant innocent;
    The brief story is, a distant cousin, living in Georgia at the time, had an altercation with one of the prominent members of a local branch of a well known organization, rumored to be a Grand Dragon. It ended in the shooting death of the GD. In an attempt to hide the deed he cut the body open and filled it with stone, sinking it in the local river. Not enough stone me thinks as the body was subsiquently discovered. In due time my cousin was arrested and put in the local hoosegow.

    His brother, also in disagreement with said local organisation, decided to break him out. The breakout almost went as planned but my cousin was said to have been shot and wounded in the escape. Friends smuggled them out of Georgia in a produce wagon. (sounds like a bad Hollywood plot.) My cousin recovered and perhaps because of this experience, became a lawman in the Texas, Oklahoma area.
    r
    In another incident, Ben, living in the Central Florida area, thought to be happily married started an affair with another cousins wife. As things progressed they decide to run off together They caught a boat to Cuba, but it was not to be. At that time of our history it was scandolous to such a degree the local authorities wired Cuban authorities so they were refused entry into the country. When the boat returned Ben disappeared while she returned home. She finnally returned home then dedicated her life in a hospital for the needy in Tampa. Ben was heard from only once aftwr when he snuck into town once to see his daughter then was never seen again. Some speculate he joined the army and died in the Spanish American war in Cuba or the first world war. ( Sounds Hollywood also but is the family lore).

    Wow you certainly have had some happenings in your family tree ! So was the organization the KK by any chance, I only ask as they get a pretty bad reputation which carries world wide I believe. And to eventually become a lawman, well it does stand test to good character doesnt it.

    Aw and poor Ben, although I do have some sympathy for his wife ! Mind you stopping his, what we call in Scotland, Biddy Inn or bit on the side, and himself from getting into Cuba seems a bit zealous to say the least !!! Oh how things have changed and are much more frequent in this modern world !

    You do have some interesting stories to tell about your lineage, you dont have any pictures of your family from those days you could scan and post, I would love to see them ! I think pictures put faces to names and make them more real, I am lucky to have old pictures of some in my family tree.

    I have some old family photos' not with me now though. I have one of Ben and one of my g g g g g grandfather (Samuel) and ggggg grandmother. Sam died in 1908 in his fifties. His wife a few years later, I believe she was the one who's dress caught fire burning her badly and she subsequently died of her injuries. Ben just disappeared. May post them later.

    Aw that is sad about Sams wife. You know sometimes I think wouldnt life be better if we went back to the past. Villages (like my own) where everyone helped each other and people were people and not numbers like today. There is so much I miss that was part of my life as a child, and then I think about people like Sams wife who would probably have survived her injuries now a days, and lots of other wonderful progress we have made.............guess I just want to have my cake and eat it to ! lol If you ever get time to scan the pictures I would love to see them.

    Oh by the way, what kind of things are you planning your decendents to find out about you !!!! lol

    A different group, perhaps affilliated in some manner, there were more groups than just the KKK though I believe I would be correct in saying they became the most prominant. As soon as I can get back to the book I'll try to let you know the name.

    Would love to know the name of the book, thank you. I enjoy a good read especially if it is non fiction. So many interesting people that have lived to read about !
