Something to be learnt about HCM from tragedy?

So I haven't been on the forum for a while but the tragic loss of one of my MCs has got me thinking about HCM. We had two MCs, Sylvester (now 5) and Dudley, 3. Both had parents that were -/- for the most commonly tested HCM gene, Sylvester has a low grade murmur which has improved and Dudley had no murmur. Two days ago Dudley suffered an arterial thromboembolism whereby his hind legs were paralysed. The onset was sudden and severe and we opted to euthanise him given the poor prognosis and his suffering. Obviously we are shocked and devastated that this should happen to such a young and lively cat.
I think I wrote a post some time ago about genetic testing for HCM- I was uncertain of the value of testing for only one gene when the genetic etiology of HCM is complex and involves a number of different genes. I think it is wrong of breeders to offer genetic status (based on testing of one gene) of an animal as some kind of guarantee of heart health. By the same token, I think it is important not to worry unduly about HCM- it is obviously a disease that is prevalent within the breed but it is something that is often difficult to detect or predict (unless we do scans). So I guess the point of my story is to urge you to cuddle your mc's as much as possible and enjoy them every day.

I am so sorry for your loss. 3 years old is much too young to cross the rainbow bridge. I Always think of one of my favorites, he lived a long happy life and I still miss him. I think a short life filled with love is still a great life. They are with us for such a short while and I agree, give them the best life you can and love them while you have them. God bless.

Thank you for your kind words. I think we are still coming to terms with it and would give anything for just one more day with him.
