Sounds as if he was getting his own back on you a bit there,if he is used to the door being shut on him at night I would stick with that, these cats are so routine orintated why change it,he most probaly picked up on you being more upset about leaving him than taking him with you.
I wouldn't worry about keeping him restricted a bit into an area where he can't hurt much while you are away,on their own most cats revert into the normal feline behaviour pattern, eat, drink, wash, pee, poo & sleep with perhaps an occasional play & top up thrown in before going back to sleep again, proves time means nothing to them when you get the same greeting if you have been out of the room 10 minutes or ten days, not like us a Hello if it is someone you saw yesterday, hello great to see you on a monthly basis or great, cuddles & kisses if it is a longer period.....
Try not to let him realise he has upset you over this or he will know he has a way of getting your attention even if it is not for the good.
Have you got someone going in to check while you are away or just leaving him well prepared to cope on his own...?

Yeah I think it’s safe to say he was mad at us for leaving him. I didn’t show him I was upset when I discovered what he had done, he was busy eating his breakfast when I saw so he got no reaction from me. I felt so bad that I must have made him so confused and upset so I gave him a big kiss and cuddle and felt I probably deserved it in his eyes.

I will have my Mum around to go and check on him and spend time with him in the day when we go away, but unless I arrange for him to go and stay with her then there will be no-one around in the evening. Next time the bedroom door will definitely be shut, no doubt about that!!

I have a friend who's cat pees on the sofa when he returns from being away - even if it's not overnight/all day. She's sly - she waits until they come back! It probably is just because he was confused and stressed?
