Wow. Mine are so chilled (!) by comparison. Mine haven't even been on the kitchen counters or the bookshelves (yet).
Perhaps distraction and establishing boundaries are the best cat proofing ? Can't remember, is Buddy the only cat in the house ? Perhaps a playmate ? More self-driven toys ? Erm. I ain't no animal psychologist
