Hi Catslave, not trying to be all "Health and Safety" on you (i'm just a worrier) but the string isn't just loose on the bow, the bow would be a totally different shape. The bow in the photos is a strung bow with the limbs under tension.
Please trust me on this one, for safety get your son to unstring it. I've seen strings snap at tournaments and it's not a pleasant experience.
I keep my bows in the garage as i would hate to think what would happen if one of the cats decided to chew on the string. We all know how much coonies like chewing wire and cables etc etc
