Perhaps he had fever coat caused by his illness? Its fairly common. Fever coat can occur if the cat had a fever. The higher the fever, the more white hairs. The hairs that turn white first are usually slightly longer hairs in the coat. Cats can have low grade fevers and have no other outward symptoms. It "rights" itself eventually which is probably why you've seen his coat go black over time. To me he looks like a solid but I'm no expert
