Mine seem to come in equal measures, have some lap cats & some who require the dignity of sitting beside not on you so with six am quite happy with that, have sat in a chair covered by 20kg plus of fluff & on a hot day it feels as if you are in a sauna....
CatsMom don't fret yet Whiskey has time to become one big luv bug we saw no sign of it from Merlyn until he was over five years old & now you get the purrs, the paw in the face to blow on,the paddles {very rough ones I might add}the luv & most importantly loads of drool with it....where did it all appear from I will never know but its there in bucketfulls now...x

Mine are all different
Sarah - female aged 3&1/2 has always been a lapcat and sleeps right up next to me at night in bed
Zack - male aged 2&1/2 was not at all but has started to come up to me about once a week and plonk on my lap if he is quick enough to beat Sarah - he sleeps on the bed at my feet
Boris - male 1&1/2 is not a lapcat at all - he does get on the back of the sofa and leans on my head - he jumps on me in bed in the morning for a purr and a pat

My 3 will all have a go on my lap so I suppose they are all lap cats. Larry doesn't stay on for long simply because he is too big. He needs 2 legs and an arm to lie on, at least! We don't have a sofa but if we did then he could spread out a bit. Monty and Herbie are the bed bugs - Herb likes burrowing under the duvet, and Monty likes to get in my face and give me a good lick!

@Luisa: I have heard, that male cats are more cuddly, too. But I cannot confirm that absolutely.
What I can confirm is, that MC-cats are no lap cats. And that female cats are little divas. Especially our domestic cat Puma. On the other side, she loves men. As soon as we have male visitors, she will sit next to him on the sofa to get a massage. At night, she will lay beneath my partners head. But Puma never would jump onto ones lap!
What I also can confirm: when the cats - especially the coonies - are chasing throught the flat, it sounds like a herd of elephants

Storm not so much a lap cat as much as a "I'm-going-to-lie-on-your-chest-or-face-cat", Benji only when it suits him. Storm I can pick up and pop in my lap and he gladly just purrs away

My three never were lap cats until they've got older. Mitch half lies over one knee when I'm sat on the sofa. He's on it now and my leg's going to sleep as he's been there about an hour whilst I've been on the PC.
Keeps will only come and sit on your knee if you're sat in the garden or sat on the toilet.
Ally isn't a lap cat but likes to lie on anything else.
Pip, the Border Collie, has been known to try and sit on your knee but he is really too big for that.www.joannes-petportraits.co.uk
