If you have Photoshop, you can use the Image > Adjustment > Levels option to bring back details in the black fur. Just experiment with the center slider in the graph.

I usually do something similar with Paint Shop Pro, but indeed, it does help a lot with the quality of the pictures. And every now and then I succeed in taking a picture that doesn't need artificial make-over, like the one posted above...
