Thread: Anyone have a deaf MC?

I think Mac manages very well. Louise has a few tricks she uses - like she never touches him if he's asleep, she will tap the floor/bed gently next to him to rouse him otherwise he leaps three feet in the air, as hes been startled awake. Please do get in touch with her

I don't know anyone with a deaf cat, but Hector has male deafness when he is fixated on the goldfish.

I do know someone with a deaf spainel though and they too don't touch him when he is sleeping but he does respond well to hand signals and given how clever MC's are I am sure you could teach the one you are looking at some signals with ease. As with deaf humans other senses are more acute he can smell food at a good distance

Wendy let me know you had asked the question so I thought I would come on to reply.

I have had Mac for 4 years now and we knew he was deaf right away.

I would never let a deaf cat outside unsupervised as they will have no road sense at all and are very suseptible to all hazards. I have a cat run in my garden and Mac is quite safe in there but indoors to me or a cat safe garden would be good too.
As Wendy said, if Mac is sleeping, I never touch him as he will always waken with a fright. He doesn't get the warning signals that others get so I tap the floor or bed..whatever he is lying on. I also have to fiind him on occasions as he will sleep so soundly and if he is hiding in a cupboard or such like, it can take a while to track him down

Deafness has its advantages though, you can hoover till your hearts content and blow dry them with the hairdryer
Mac is usually the first to meet me at the door as he picks up the vibrations of my feet of car and he can smell food from the garden which has been fun when I have been trying to give my pregnant girl extra food on the quiet..there is no sneaking around Mac..he will find out.
Mac will knock things off shelves if he is bored.,..he can not hear the noise so thinks it is fun to watch then drop. He will also yell very loudly occasionally as he has no volume control on his own voice
He follows my hand signals and will come when asked and I wouldn't change Mac for anything
Deaf cats are very special and they have special needs but they can fabulous too..
I hope some of that helps with your decision and yes, I would take another deaf cat.although I would not choose for them to be deaf in the first place

I also should have added that deaf cat, as far as I am concearned , is always beter to be with other cats as they can follow on..when my cats run in for something, Mac automatically follows..they need a mate to help them along, I think

Thanks for the helpful advise Louise but my partner got his way and we're going with the silver tabby he liked best! The fact that the deaf cat had some problems with his tear ducts which would take some time to resolve was also a factor in the decision. I'm half hoping that I convince Tom to have 3 cats! Mac is gorgeous and certainly sounds as if he gets on really well.
