Shaving your cat due to excessive heat?
Hello all, I'm new here and I have a question that might seem odd.
Back story: I have a rather large Main Coon called Tai-Tai. He's almost 9 years old now, neutered, a relative sweetie, but very territorial and has decided that he will NOT be in indoor only kitty. I know how dangerous this can be, between the parasites, other animals or being hit by a car.
I've had central air installed with all new windows that lock from the inside, and have told the household to watch out so he doesn't get out. However, he seems to be part ninja, part Harry Houdini because he still manages to get out. I have no idea how.
So, long story made short: it's now 102 outside as I type this. I know cats can't sweat, and a long haired cat like Tai can have issues with the heat. I just managed to drag him inside so he could gulp down some water. He's sitting in front of the fan with a cool wet towel draped over him which he seems to like, but I'm wondering:
Can I shave him? Would that help? Would it make it worse?
I've owned Maine Coons for years, and Ive never heard of anyone doing that, other than for illness related issues. I've looked at various sites over the net and cant seem to get an answer. Any input would be appreciated.
