Try putting more wet food down and see how much he really wants to eat in one go. Give him one and a half times his normal portion and, if he eats it all, maybe the portion was too small. Do you give half a can of kitten food (i.e. a small can) or half a large can? Maybe try a different variety of dry too which may encourage him to eat more of that if he doesn't each much dry.
