Don't know about Bristol but we put our 3 in a cattery for the first time last September. As jckkerrison says, you kinda know at once if it's the 'right' place. We turned up unexpectedly and the kitchen was clean and tidy, they had no qualms about showing us around, and all the cats looked well-looked after. They kept a daily diary on how much they eat, how they were etc. They even gave ours the pen/run next to the one we'd booked as well as it was empty (for free) - great service that showed they cared. And although I still hated leaving them, they we absolutely fine when we picked them up (although Sunshine wouldn't shut up when we got him home - kept walking around the house 'talking' to everything!!) x

The other option (and the one i prefer) is to get a cat sitter.
In our local Pets@home there is a notice board and i've quite often seen adverts on there from people who will pop in a couple of times a day to feed/pamper/empty litter trays etc.
It works out to be about the same as cattery fees, but is obviously a lot less stressful for the kitties as they stay in their own home.
