I can only give advice from my experiences. We have always given our cats nicknames that changed throughout their lifetime. Each new name they learned to respond to. We never meant to call them anything different from their given name, but just couldn't help ourselves. Our cat Penny was also called Cat or Penny Cat. Our cat Copper was also called Bee or Bee Bee or Buddy & he responded to them all. Our cat Storm was also called Beast and when he was about 8yrs old we started calling him Bug. Bug became our favorite. He responded to all of his names too. So far we haven't come up with any nicknames for Whiskey, but I'm sure it will happen one day.
To switch names you can try calling him by using Kasper plus his new name as his middle name. After he is adjusted to both names being called, you can then shorten it by using just his new name. I also like jckkerrison's idea of Jasper.
I also believe that when it comes to vaccines, it is better to be safe then sorry. I always vaccinate per my vets recommendations.
