I adopted a 2 1/2 year old retired breeding queen in February and renamed her with no problem. We still haven't gotten her papers but her official name was Miccah but the last breeder had called her Mia. We renamed her Saoirse. She had a lot of changes to get used so we figured what was one more. She did sleep with us for a while after she arrived and the first few nights she came looking for us crying. Then for a few months she would come into our bedroom in the early morning and curl up in-between our pillows. I think she was insecure when we weren't around. Now she just does her own thing. Usually she is with me in my office upstairs but she likes to be downstairs sometimes for birdwatching too.
She is now enjoying life as an only cat of an older couple quite different than the life a queen. We are her fifth home so I worried about how long it would take her to adjust (especially since she was spayed less than a week before shipping) but she seemed happy enough right off the bat. Spent a lot of time exploring the house and figuring the best windows for bird watching and deciding where to nap in our offices. Our last MC wouldn't allow you to pick her up so I am greatly enjoyed this love bug.
I brought her to our vet for a going over so I recommend you do the same and let them figure out what he needs in way of vaccinations. Our girl picked up an infection when she was spayed that just showed itself the day after her arrival.
My new girl acts like a kitten and would play all day if I had the time. That's the nice thing about MCs; they are like big kittens. I'm sure you will enjoy yours.
