Yes, individual cats are different. My silver tabby girl Minnie has very long fur that is softer than silk. My black smoke boy Monty has a thick, long and rather coarse feeling coat. My torbie girl Tatja's fur is rather short and feels somewhat less silky than Minnie's.
Do take care to get him used to regular combing/brushing. If you leave it for too long grooming can become something of a struggle, as I have noticed.
