Thread: Chewing Cords

Hi there,

I was just wondering whether your Maine Coon Kittens chew through cords, and, apart from trying to barricade/hide the cords, what other techniques have proven useful? At what age do they stop chewing through cords?

Ours have a taste for speaker wire, Roxy mainly has killed the daddy's suround sound a couple of times!

She also likes to chew through the elastic on dangling toys bless her, but has not bothered with any power cables.

Simba has never chewed wires. Guess we have been lucky - it was something I worried about particularly because when he was young he was in the office with me a lot and there are lots of computer and phone wires around. If I ever saw him showing interest I'd just say no and push him away. He seemed to get the idea quickly.

Sarah never looked at any cords but Zack had a few goes when he first arrived. I was completely paranoid about it.

Where I had multiple cords i tied them together so there was a bigger bunch. I caught him a couple of time chewing my phone cord and I sprayed him with a water bottle and since then he has stopped ( I think ). Havent seen him do it again and havnt found a chewed one!

When Louie was smaller he managed to climb on the shelf of the tv unit & kept playing with the cabels, not goog, we got some Pure Essentail Orange oil & mixed a few drops in a water spray bottle, spayed some kitchen paper & put it at the front of the shelf they hate the smell & he has'nt botherd since. Also handy for other places you dont want scratching or interfering with

Just be carefull to get the right stuff though, not the one that you put in a pot & burn thats not good for animals.

The orange oil trick works if they pick the hardest to reach corner to have a wee in when they babies.

Wash the area with biological washing liquid then use the oil on a cotton wool pad.
