Recommendations on reputable breeders wanted!
Hello all! This is my first time on the MC forum. I could really do with some help and advice. I am wanting to purchase a Maine coon boy kitten but am a little concerned about where to start. I live in the South West of England and wondered if anyone could suggest a reputable breeder preferrably in the South West or South Wales area or the Midlands. Thanks.

I had nothing but good experiences with Heather of Namrib; she is based near Birmingham www.namrib.co.uk
There is the SLHCA Show on in Brum tomorrow where there will be many breeders you could come talk to. THE SEMI LONG HAIR CAT ASSOCIATION - open to visitors from 12:20 I think.

Thank you Peter. I can't make it up to Birmingham tomorrow but I will definitely have a look at the website you mentioned.

... Yesterday, when Kiwi first asked the question, I wrote something along the lines of -
" Our recent experience with Liz of Hamshill in Gloucester was a good one
http://www.maine-coon-forum.info/sou...stershire.html "
- but instead of posting the post, I was advised it needed moderator approval which didn't seem to happen ... so let's try again - just to see if I can post in this forum today.
ETA - yes, it seems I can!Last edited by OhFah; 17th March 2012 at 11:42 AM.

There are some good breeders in the areas you have requested.
No matter what just make sure that you, ask questions.
Maybe follow some important new owners tips, we did have some here on the forum but not sure where anymore
Make sure you see all the kittens not just one and the parents.
Ask to see where they are reared, don't just let them bring them all to you, this may mean you have to be prepared to take off your shoes and scrub your hands, and in some case where a overall.
My advice never visit until you are sure the kittens have had their first vaccinations( Breeder that allow this are not being very sensible as before this age the kittens are very vunerable)
Ask to see any tests the parents have had to make sure they are tested for what the breeder should test against like HCM.
Ask which registration body they are with so you can contact them if need be.
Check which clubs they are a member of.
Ask what the kittens have been fed on and what they will be fed on when they live their breeder to ensure that you are prepared should you chose a kitten. ( For instance if a kitten has been fed only RAW food and you know or do not feel you want to feed this way better to say so before you commit to a kitten.
Check which kind of litter tray and litter they use again so you can be prepared.
NEVER chose a kitten because its very quiet and withdrawn and easy to handle..
Check what the current weight is of the kitten... to ensure he/she is a good size.
GOOGLE the cattery name...
If I have missed something then I am sure some one can addLast edited by debbie560; 17th March 2012 at 03:41 PM.

I would also add to:
check which vaccinations the kitten will have had (some breeders don't vaccinate against FeLV),
check when the kitten is due to be wormed and de-fleaed
that the kitten will already have been registered with GCCF/TICA/FB when you get him/her
find out whether the kitten will have been microchipped
Good luck! I'm sure you'll find a fab kitten

Also check with TICA, GCCF, Fb etc that the breeder is not registered with to find out if there is a reason why they are not registered with them. If you can visit a show that the breeder is taking cats to and watch how other breeders act towards them - if they are stuck on the back bench on their own with no one takling to them there is a reason.
