Hi Pralinehalo,
We started showing just last year so like you we weren't totally sure what to do, what the judges look for etc. etc.
We give the cat a good shampoo on the Weds before a show, then we powder her on the Thursday, and Friday night (lots of powder, rub it in well, and brush it all out.) The tip we were given is to use normal Baby powder on silver/blue coats and Fullers Earth on Browns, Reds and Torties. You can pick up Fullers Earth fairly cheaply on eBay.
Also try to make sure the claws are clipped, and the eyes and ears are nice and clean.
Here's a link to the Judges comments on our Saffi from last year it gives you some idea what they look for. You can see we went from absolute novices to having our girl made up to Champion in just 5 shows.
