I was planning to get just one, but the breeder told me that my future kitty had a sister, and they are big "buddies"; he offered a discount on a second kitten.
At first I declined, but in 1 week changed my mind with some fears that I may be overwhelmed by two of them. I am so glad I got two! They have quite different personalities but really care about each other( the "buddies" idea was not a seller's trick)
One of the arguments the breeder used was that most of his kittens when sold in pairs to couples, agree between themselves who they want to bond with, husband or wife.
My husband and I were watching them through their "toddlers" stage trying to determine
"who is going to be My cat" Anastasia (smokey-blue with color points) bonded with me, and blond bombshell Ariella with my husband. At night they switch places and for unknown reasons Ariella sleeps next to me, while Anastasia is snoring next to my husband. Yes, we have California King bed but often feel squished when cats decide to stretch across the bed.
