Is Your Maine Coon a Lap Cat

Samantha was my best friend for 15 1/2 years but she wasn't a lap cat.
My previous cat would sit in my lap for hours.
Someone on another forum suggested maybe she felt too big for my lap, I don't think that ever stopped a cat from laying anywhere, she would sometimes sleep in the bathroom sink and she barely fit.
So I'm wondering what percentage of Maine Coon Cats like lap time.

My MC Buddy has only been with me a couple of weeks, but as his confidence grows he is spending more and more time on my lap. Well part of him is as he is a little too big lol

Bruce & Shimba have been lap cats since day one,Merlyn was too stuck up & independant to afford you that pleasure as a babe but as an adult has become one,Wellynton Boots only lap sits at his convenience but loves to lay beside you or on the chair back {where he rearranges your hair to the latest spike style without the use of hair gel}Pansy P is a layer by your side as well & China RIP was up as close to your face as she could get with her arms wrapped round your neck & head under chin, gets a bit warm sometimes when you disappear under several kgs of fur & normally have to come up for air sneezing but wouldn't be without it at & it is a bl**dy good excuse not to have to get up & make a cuppa or answer the phone, sorry dear I have got several kg draped over different parts of the body, can't move.....

Of my three brothers only the biggest, Bertie, aims for laps. Sometimes Dicky will lie across me on the sofa if I am also lying down, but not in the lap.

If I pick him up MC Elvis is good for about 20-60 seconds of lap time.

He's jumped up in my lap exactly one time on his own since I got him. Started purring up a storm for about a minute and then hopped down.

That's the only time I've heard him purr loudly as well.

I think he doesn't like the lap both because he's way too big ( he can take up my entire chest and stomach if I'm laying flat )
and because he gets overstimulated fairly quickly. He's only two, so he may get more into it as he ages and calms down some.

He's extremely friendly and affectionate, but seems to prefer "near" or "next to" to actually being on a lap.

Mufasa definitely isn't a lap cat. If in a moment of weakness we pick him up and put him on our laps, he tries desperately to get off and to be quite honest he is so big and heavy - he hurts! He does like to come and lay beside you or at your feet so it's not the human contact thing he doesn't like. I'm guessing he finds it as uncomfortable as we do!

Jones isn't really interested in sitting in your lap. Sometimes you can pick him up and he might stay put for a minute before wandering off, but he's never come and jumped into our laps. He will come and lie next to you for a nap if you stay in one place long enough - he is napping on my desk obscuring the work I am trying to do as I type!

Little Flo isnt a lap cat, she is more of a foot cat. Her favourite move is to wrap herself around bare feet which is all nice and cuddly until she bites a toe, which seems to be part of the whole foot thing - this is not cuddly at all! Noah is not a lap cat either, but he loves to be picked up and cuddled and occasionally enjoys shoulder sitting, but laps - no!

Storm sometimes if he feels like it, for about a minute. He then prefers to cuddle right up next to you.
Benji sometimes, if he is about to fall asleep. Otherwise he has far more important business than being my lapcat :D

If it wasn't so embarrassing it would be great to post some pictures of us with our "cat hair styles",Welly has got to doing it with visitors as well now, although we stop him rearranging any of the ladies who visit if the men are happy we let him carry on & it amuses everyone how he gets his paw & pushes or pulls your head to get it into position so he can reach another spot, exactly how a hairdresser would do it.
Yep I agree NCarver the tounges are rather too rough for us delicate human beings skin but you can't offend by stopping them can you,the look of intense pleasure on their little faces just makes you have to grimace & pretend you are loving it,bless......
