Electra ate a twist tie!
Electra managed to un-twist a twist tie and eat it.
My partner saw her fooling around with a twist tie that held a little gate open. A moment later the tie was un-done and the gate snapped shut. She put a second twist tie on the gate, and Electra was un-doing that one a minute later. She took the twist tie from Electra but didn't find the first one.
She didn't know Electra had eaten the first one. She looked for it and couldn't find it.
When I got home she told me the story. Electra was fine, doing the Kitten Gallop and eating heartily.
This morning she was subdued, no Morning Gallop and wouldn't eat. Bad sign, we thought.
To the vet's.
The twist tie is arrowed in the picture. Fortunately, it has passed into her colon, past the point of maximum danger. Electra is now galloping around again, eating heartily (she has gained a bit over a pound in four weeks). We now have only to, uh, inspect for the emergence of the twist tie.
Who knew a kitten could un-twist a twist tie and then find it appealing as something to eat? The dexterity involved in taking the tie off of the structural application we were using it for is just amazing.
The twist-tie gate opener has been replaced by a wide nylon strap she could chew on for years without getting through.
