    Messy eater!

Hello, wondered if anyone could help. 2 questions!

    1. We have a maine coon who is approximately 1.5 years old. We are aware that Maine Coons are the messy eater breed, but has anyone found a dish that helps to minimise the mess? (i.e. is there a special shaped bowl that would help? I have read that a very deep bowl may help?). Our cat has a habit of knocking a large percentage of his food out of his bowl and onto the tray below. He then refuses to voluntarily eat the food he knocks out of the bowl, instead he waits for his bowl to be re-filled. Is this normal? I often put the food back in the bowl if not dry, but wondered if other people have this issue too? It causes such a mess!! (My sisters cats wouldn't dream of not eating all the food in their bowls, and would eat anything knocked over the edge, but then her cats are not maine coons.

    2. Our cat has been treated with frontline in the last two months, but he has brought fleas back into the house. Has anyone tried the 6 month lasting jab? I'm particularly prone to being bitten and so is my newborn baby (yet strangely my husband and son are not) so any tips would be very welcome. We have sprayed the house again with Indorex Spray, but just want the fleas to go!!! HELP!!!

    Thanks in advance.

The trick is to get a bowl deep enough to contain the mess AND wide enough to accommodate those long, bushy MC whiskers! If the bowl is too narrow it is uncomfortable for the cat to eat from. I have a few deep and wide bowls, just simple plastic ones I picked up at the dollar store!

I use Frontline currently and haven't had any issues yet with fleas, but it seems to lose its potency quickly and if you forget to apply it every month you could get into a buggy situation. The last time we had trouble we got a powerful perimeter spray from the vet and it actually worked! Its called Siphotrol Premise Spray, the company is called Vet Kem. Since then, we use Ortho Home Defense twice a year, which kills all kinds of critters and fleas. Of course use a flea comb every day, a few times a day, mop and sweep like crazy, and if all else fails call the exterminator (been there done that). Good luck!!!

The program inj isn't so popular now but people who do use it find it successful if you would like to try it make sure that you use another product alongside it for the first two to three months to allow it to kick in then you should be able to rely on just the program inj..... Fleas seem to like some people more than others & you & babe just happen to be the unlucky one..... Although my cats are indoors/restricted to the garden I had a flea infestation while using Frontline so must have brought something home from work with me & I changed to Stronghold {again has to be applied monthly}but it doesn't protect against ticks which is no good if your furry is allowed to roam.
I had a messy eater so used to put the bowl onto a place mat & just shovel it back in, I am very wary of plastic dishes having seen a cat at work about to be PTS for tum problems that couldn't be got right, the people wanted their daughter to be able to say goodbye to it so waited a few days for her to be able to get home & when the day arrived they said to the vet that the strange thing was day by day it had seemed to improve,as by then all treatments that had been helping a bit had been stopped the vet said ok lets think of this logically you must have done something different now rattle your brains, eventually they came up with the plastic dish they fed it off of was looking so scratched they had thrown it out & as the furry was going to be PTS had been feeding it off of a china saucer.....the vet told them to go home & continue feeding it from just that & a young cat that could have gone went on to a ripe old age,can never forget that,I know chances are very very slim of it ever happening again but something like that sticks......xxx

Neevie is a messy pirate - we put her bowl (wide and deep) on a tray with high sides - it contains the mess, but doesn't stop it. She also loves to take her bits of chicken away, preferably on the carpetted area where it's most inconvenient :-P

I've sorted this problem - I feed them both off a small plastic tray I bought from the £1 shop (was with the BBQ and picnic stuff)!! It's about the length of a placemat but slightly narrower, doesn't have much of a rim around it - room for their whiskers and as easy to clean as a plastic bowl. It's practically like feeding them off the floor. Best thing I've bought.
