I also would suggest trying with lid of litterbox removed. We have never had problems such as you describe, but our experience has been that they prefer to not be cramped. When we bought our first "giant" litterbox posted earlier, the biggest male immediately quit using all of the smaller pans (and we quit having problems with deposits made over the edges of these pans).
