    Question about Maine Coon kitties

Ok, I recently (May 2011) adopted a cat from the shelter that supposedly came in as a stray....yea right. This cat is so friendly and his temperment is not that of a stray. Anyway, I had a Maine Coon growing up and ALWAYS wanted to get one again. Buddy has been a wonderful addition to our home. I know he is probably not full Maine Coon he is more of a mix but he definately has the Maine Coon traits (i.e. extremely friendly, a really long and bushy tail, longer fur under his neck, and the horn-like fur out of the top of the ears). Now due to the cold weather coming we brought out our kerosene heater last week during the snowstorm blackout. And I noticed right away that Buddy LOVES this heater. He curls right up next to it and sleeps for hours. Then he will come over to see me and his fur will be so warm to the touch. He will get so close to this thing he sticks his nose right in it and I have to yell for him to get away. My question is.....do they normally like heat??? He seems to have enough fur to keep him plenty warm but he just cant get enough heat.....lol. Thanks.

Hi Jennifer, my MC is still fairly young but seems to gravitate to doorways than radiators or other heat sources; this behaviour though may not be typical though either. Just wanted to say that Buddy looks a very fine cat with wonderful markings and I'm glad he now has a proper home x

    Hi Jennifer
Every cat I've ever had is a heat-seeker and will get themselves as warm as they possibly can. So I don't think your Buddy is doing anything weird!
Don't forget, cats were originally desert-dwelling creatures and love to be warm.
    And Buddy is gorgeous! x

Hi Jennifer, I adopted a rescue cat in May and he also turned out to be a coonie. I didn't have a name for him and he was named on here as BUDDY due to a fetish of his. Buddy also has his own Profile on here RebelMC so if its easier I can refer to my ginger whinger as the rebel. We have had a few good laughs on here due to my Buddy's love of heat and his taking over my electric blanket. My Buddy LOVES heat and I have to be very careful in the kitchen to make sure he doesn't go to sleep in the oven :O

I have to say that my Buddy is the cause of an addiction that I have now - I am a severe sufferer of Maine Conn - itis and have a gorg lil norti torti and her brother coming from another member on here in Feb and have this week end taken in a lil B&W MC? poss cross but ... I want 6 ....... so that means I will end up with about a dozen xxx

Thank you guys for your responses and thanks to you I will not worry about my Buddy. Now maybe you can help with something else.....the only way I can hear him purr is when he is hugging me while sitting on my shoulder only when my ear is pressed up against him. I know he is a happy cat but he does not purr. And also he does not meow either. Its kinda like a cackle, or chatter is this normal? He absolutely is a lover and I dont know how I ever managed without him. I have never had a cat that acts like him though. He sleeps on his back with all four paws in the air, he is clumsy especially with that HUGE tail of his, He is just a big baby and he is 2 years old!!!

Male MC's are famous for being clumsy they go through everything rather than going round, they are not great at meowing either as their repertoire is more chirrups & general chit chat, male & female that is although the girls don't tell you such a lot of nonsense as the boys,as for the purring they all seem to differ,I have one boy now coming up to four & he has only just started doing a purr that you can hear, still doesn't do it very often & on the occasions it has come out quite loud he seems to frighten himself with it & looks round to see where it came from but that is the joys of owning MC's part or whole pedigree, they are just so different & at 2yrs old Buddy is still a big baby they don't mature until they are around 4yrs,still waiting to notice a big difference even then, welcome to you both...xxx

We have open stairs in the living room and my two sleep on a certain stair, the warmest one! It's really funny to see them both squeezed on it. They are known as trip and hazard
I also call them my rampaging hippo's as the noise they make chasing each other I am amazed that the stairs have survived and yes they are clumsy Hector more than Roxy it's funny when they are playing and they run into the dining room as they can not get a grip on laminate
