Adopting a kitten in two weeks!

    Hi,

I am new to the forum and will be a new owner to a Main coon kitten in two weeks! I've had cats before (about 9) in the past when I was young at different times. However, I have never had a Main coon. I have been reading about how this breed is different than other cats and I am very interested to know how different they are from other cats. What do I need to know before adopting a Main coon?

I am adopting mine from a local private breeder and she has an adorable litter of kittens ready to go home in two weeks. I also was wondering if there is any difference between having a male or female?

    Thanks!

In the book "The Yankee Cat" the author describes that if Maine Coon males were human they would be little boys with dirty faces and frogs in the pockets, the girl on the other hand are most gracious, they're beautiful and they know it but aren't stuck up about.
I had the privilege of being owned by a most beautiful Maine Coon girl, my beloved Samantha and she was just the most wonderful cat imaginable.

Add males as being the "lights on no one at home" village idiot to what cooncatbob says & you have basically got it in one although as with all there are exceptions to the rule,I have always maintained that the girls are always busy busy & very bright but having taken nearly three months for our girl to learn how to go "out" of a cat flap have to admit some females obviously have a lower wattage light bulb fitted...
Do enjoy your new babe will look forward to seeing & hearing all about it & I don't think it will be too many months down the line you will be smitten by how different owning a MC is to others but all the basics are still the same just make sure everything you buy is that bit larger....x

I can't really comment on the girls as I've never had one, but having 3 boys I would say, 'big goofy cuddle monkey' covers it nicely.

Also, the MC will follow you around like a dog, and hates being separated from you in the house. They want to know where you are and what you're doing!

Hi, welcome to the forum. Looking forward to see photos of your new baby.
I agree that Maine Coons are something else - people-oriented, sociable, friendly, very curious...
My male El Monto fits the description of a not-too-bright goofball. And my torbie girl Tatja is your typical feminine feline - graceful and mysterious. But my youngest girl Minnie is something of a silly tomboy, though awfully sweet-natured and cuddly.

Oh, and jckkerrison is right - do buy everything xxl sized... litter tray, travel cage, cat trees, beds, etc.

I have another question. I noticed that the kittens in the breeders pictures have blue eyes and they are brown tabby and the males are orange and white kittens. However, I haven't seen adult cats with those eye colors, does the eye color change as they get older?

Yes, by the time they're about 3 months they will have their adult eye colour. (Except for some all-whites, in which case testing for deafness is in order.)
