To be honest the system in Yvonne's link doesn't look like it could resist a big strong Coon. Our little Minnie once even managed to pry loose the frame of the catflap just by violent scratching and pulling ... hubby had to re-fasten it with heavy duty bolts, lol.

I think you need netting or wire mesh in a frame which you then attach to the window frame with hooks or something...

Our windows slide up in the window frame. So the bottom half of our windows have a screen already there. While lying on the windowsill our Storm (20 lb half-MC) stretched out the screens to the point they'd billow in the wind. We have replaced the screens, but now have holes & small tears in them from Whiskey's nails. We have a baby-gate that we used for our dog that would fit the window frame, but luckily haven't had the need.

My daughter had heavy mesh screens made up to fit all the windows in her house they easily hooked on or off she even had a big one made so she could have the door open too,if we lived across the waters in warmer climates we would most probaly be lucky enough to buy houses with them already attatched as norm.....!

All cats want to experience the outside world, chase after that squirrel or bird they saw, and generally enjoy the outdoors. It doesn't make you a bad owner by keeping them inside. I expect many of us have the same problem, but the cats eventually realise that certain windows will be opened for them and others stay on the latch. Mesh screens are a great idea, providing you can secure them and don't mind looking out through them.

It is funny how they seem to know when a window is opened in a room somewhere in the house. There were no cats upstairs yesterday afternoon, so I opened my bedroom windows for a few minutes, but within moments there was a stampede up the stairs and three of my MCs charged into the room and on to the sill. Luckily, they are not silly enough to go outside and I shut the windows quickly. Have you ever seen disappointment x 3?

Ours are indoor cats (with free access to an enclosure) but I always had the problem of not being able to open the windows in the house, especially the bedroom windows. Having looked at the links for the ready made mesh screens I thought I could probably run up something myself. So, armed with some pvc-coated fibreglass insect mesh, bias binding, a sewing machine and some sticky Velcro I've just created this. Granted it won't prevent the most determined of Coonies throwing their weight but I have to say I'm quite pleased with the results
