Skinny genes?
Hi All,
I have a question about skinny cats.
We got Callie at 13 weeks. She was a skinny girl, but soon got to be a normalish weight. Her mother and aunts seemed a bit skinny, but they were fed often and really loved by their owners. Callie is growing like a weed, and I'm worried about her weight. I leave her food out 24 hours a day, as I work from home and can keep topping it up. I give her Royal Cairn Maine Coon Kitten 2/3rds and 1/3 whiskas. She eats her fill and then goes off. I give her a few treats every day. She seems to be eating contently, but her bones on her lover back don't seem to have any fat/muscle padding them. Is this normal for a cat that is growing so much? She will be 1 on Feb 6th. What is a normal weight for a MC girl of her age?
PS you can see a picture in my gallery
Thanks,
Steph

Standing there she looks healthy enough to me....
I am not sure on girls weights,my first was adult when we got her & Ruby who I have now weighed 6kg at a year old but she is from a big line,Bruce the old man of the family only weighs slightly heavier than her now,he is long & lean & you could "play" his back bone & haunches but I was told by his breeder as a babe that his lines were like that & not to expect a big heavy looking cat,how right she was but I luv his long lean look. You could always check with the breeder if you are worried but think you have hit the nail on the head "It's in the gene's"....xxx

Thanks Jckkerrison! I think I'm worried for no reason, she acts fine. I just wanted to make sure, as I'm just learning about this bread. I weighed her last night and she was 9lbs 8oz which is roughly 4 and a half kilos. Having said that she is just about a foot from me now eating away.

That sounds like a decent weight to me. Cats have different builds, just like people. I have two sisters who are 11 months old, one is around 8.5lb, the other is nearly 10lb. Strangely, the smaller girl looks big because she is so fluffy where the bigger girl has a sleek coat. I weigh my youngsters once or twice a month until they are 2, just so I can keep track of their development. If you do the same, I'm sure you will see that Callie is gaining weight.
