    Separation anxiety?

I think we have a big problem.
our back garden has been cat-proofed and Sid appears to love it outside, he wakes me up early every morning to be let out and can be reluctant to come in at bedtime. So, we had no worries about leaving him out during the day, with food, water and a little house, whilst we are at work.

However, I have just been told by my neighbour that he has taken to sitting by the door and howling for HOURS whilst we are out. He also sits by the fence "talking" to them and getting increasingly upset because he can't reach them

    What do we do?

We could make a hole in the wall and put in a cat flap for him, so he can come indoors.
we could keep him in all day and just let him out in the evenings (but this results in a very "lively" cat at bedtime)
We could get him some company (the guinea pigs are clearly not enough!) - another MC kitten?

My husband is not keen on any of these suggestions - what do you peeps think?

    hi Weasel!
oh poor little Sid! no fun being a kitty!
the catflap idea seems good to me for a start - but it might not resolve things, if his issue is separation anxiety. It won't make you any less gone, I mean, just that he'll be able to come into the house and see for himself that you're not there. But may be it's not separation anxiety but simply "let-me-in'ness"? (what? it's a word...) he's used to having the door open eventually by praying loudly to it for a while. Sometimes it takes longer for the God-of-the-Door to answer, may be, so you have to pray longer?

I know what you mean about HOs being spoilsports and not answering positively to our cluckiness. I also want another baby-cat, and he's being stubborn, using logic as a weapon.

I agree with you - whilst he's praying to the Door God, we "might" be indoors. With the cat flap he will know for certain that he is alone in his universe... Once the new kitten (!) is settled in I can get a flap fitted. There is a hole I've found for a tumble dryer outlet that we don't use, as long as he stays skinny he can probably fit through. Might need a greasing station as well to ease him through!

i have been pushing the financial side: I've already spent £400 on a Tigga Tower and £700 on cat proofing the garden, not to mention the new cat box, litter tray, toys... So, financially it makes sense to have more cats making the most of the facilities! Unbelievably, thus seems to working!

We are going to look at an Elmcoon kitten on Saturday. She is 8 weeks old and her sale fell through. The timing would be perfect, she is ginger. Our vet is thoroughly in favour of the idea, he always has cats in pairs and did suggest a rescue moggy - but he knows that is really a lost cause! I've never had a girl cat before - are they much different? Anybody out there had a cat from them? The lady made all the right noises, kits not released until 14 weeks old, will be fully vaccinated etc.

(Ssshhhhh! My neighbour has told me that she thinks her husband was winding Sid up through the fence and that was upsetting him. The more I think about it, the happier I'd be about leaving him during the day if he had company, so I'm keeping quiet. I will have to be careful how I set up the "investigate webcam" which hubby has bought to see what is happening!)

hahahahaha - loooooove the way your mind works! I really laughed out loud at that (startling Neevie during her nap, I got the evil eye for that)
sadly, I do not believe we have yet spent enough on our Pirate to be able to leverage that aspect of the issue - but it is an EXCELLENT point, which would also work with my HO - thank you so much for thinking about it and communicating!

I have just offered to buy hubby a kitten for his birthday. He is now threatening to leave home!

Come into this thread a bit late but have to say I think getting company is the bestest idea ever....don't know the breeder you mentioned but her babes look lovely {would it be the one that has reserved until 12th by it or another one} one just has to go & take a peek doesn't one.....a girl is great fun,I always say boys turn into village idiots & the girls stay busy busy busy so would be a super combination.... I think you should carry out your promise...oooops sorry threat to buy your hubby a kitten & when he leaves home obviously you can't break the furry partnership up but as he would be leaving his babe behind he would have to pay maintenence........now that to me is the way forward....says she who would never go against her hubbys wishes, oooops nose just hit the keyboard.......

The deed is done. We collect Ava Sharon from Elmcoon in two weeks time.
Hubby is so disgruntled with Sidney right now that he wanted to swap cats!
Sidney ate so many mice that he got an upset tummy. He did a mega-stinky-yuck-bomb in the litter tray then decided that he needed a wee before anyone had a chance to clean it out. So, logically, he looked around for somewhere less smelly. Could have been worse, but we certainly won't be eating anything from that particular vegetable box.
I was away for 2 days, leaving hubby in charge. He came home from work, expecting Sidney to be really pleased to see him, Sid just looked up, went "meh, not bothered about YOU", and looked away.
I suspect that my OH will be very keen on little Ava, if only to wind up Sid!

heeheeehee! hey could be worse, mine bites our legs when she's crabby - that's an improvement from back in the days when she used to jump on my head and use her teeth and claws to grapple to it... I did not like her very much then... :-D

Congratulations on getting the new little Ava! really pleased for you and only a little bit jealous! :-)
