Ours do it as well. I once read somewhere it has to do with their forebears' past as outdoor cats... clearing leaves off of the water surface. The theory sure sounds romantic, but personally I am a bit skeptical.

Only Freyja does it - once or twice Wicca's copied her, but Freyja does it ALL the time. Food, water, cat milk, vitamin drinks - I'm sure she does it more now Wicca's here. Like Antonia, I'd read it was something their ancestors did, only the thing I read was about burying their food to save it for later. I find the two cats favourite toys in the cat milk constantly, so I assume they're hiding those too... Freyja will spend minutes pawing at the cupboards in an effort to cover the cat milk up. Even had to change the food mats under their bowls as the one we had was quite floppy and it kept getting turned upside down to cover Freyja's bowls up. Perhaps Wicca doesn't try and bury anything as she's generally wolfed down her grub like a one-man-plague-of-locusts and there's rarely much left once she's finished troughing!

Phew! I'm glad it's normal. I think Mufasa must have been reading this as he has now started digging around his food too - maybe I should start a thread asking if maine coons can read

I thought only Arucard had this crazy thing to dig around his water bowl! I always wonder what on earth he is trying to do! Neither of my other cats does that, but he has always done it!
