Great description thanks, and they do look very cute ! I find it quite interesting how the breeding system works where as you say due to fashion, they are being bred differently... In the book I mentioned (many years ago) where I first saw the Abysinian and thought wow what a big cat, the Maine Coon looks quite different to what they look like now.. I'm pretty sure the long ear tuffs weren't anywhere near as distinct and certainly not the size they are now.

Cats have changed so much over the year, with meddling from breeders, some for the good a lot for the bad, my first breed was Siamese and Balinese, I sadly got Leukemia in my cattery in the 70 and was wiped out almost... but the new stock to bring in was so thin and had so many health issues and problems with breeding I neutered them all I gave up.. we still have 2 14 year old Siamese neuters but never again.. They are trying to do the same with the Abyssinians... its all about fashion and what they think the cat should look like.. LEAVE it alone is what I say and always will..
