As with most of you, we have spent lots of time researching and arguing over names....
Our first cat, a stray MC mix got named Karma (because he was lucky we took him in). My wife came up with that, and though I wasn't thrilled with it, it wasn't too bad (and she hated my choices). Ended up being a particularly good name for him, as we also found he had HCM and probably would have died soon outdoors, but we gave him more than 4 years of additional life--plus a great deal of love.
Our girl Bella had been named Bellagio by the breeder, and we thought Bella was a very appropriate name for such a beautiful girl so we just kept it.
Our other girl, Allie, was a retiree, so we did want want to change her name (she was nearly 1 yr old).
A difficult case was our now 18mos old male. He had gone for a few weeks to somebody that decided she did not want him (and he did not seem happy). She had been calling him Reddy Bear (he is red MC, dad was T. Bear). We kind of wanted something that sounded similar to Reddy, though we did not like Reddy. Went back and forth and back and forth. My wife came up with Remy--so Remy Bear--but then changed her mind. I liked that though, so I began calling him that since we had had him for several weeks and he needed a final name (he was supposed to be primarily *my* cat). She was calling him other things for a while, but Remy eventually won out (helped that breeder said she liked it).
Our most recent cat, a now 6mos old male MC also took some time, but we got started as soon as we found him. The breeder had been calling him "Z" (it was her "Chicago Cubs" litter, so after Zambrano). Since we had all been calling him Z for a while, we were interested in finding a Z name--though not required. As time to pick him up approached, and the name search made little progress, we got a bit frustrated. Finally were able to agree on Zephyr. Helped that it was a Z name and that breeder really liked it. Of course, we thought it good since breeder said what a sweet guy he was, but sometimes now we think "Gale" would have been more appropriate given the mischief he can get into.
One thing I see in our naming decision cases was that one family member eventually basically decided the matter due to strong feelings on one! Having all three of us agree on the same top choice is pretty hopeless.Last edited by mcguy; 4th February 2010 at 09:40 PM.
