    Brown Mackerel Tabby .....silver?!?

I got a question for you, I reserved a little awesome girl, and some days ago we went to see her (she was 3 weeks and a half old).
She's a loverly brown mackerel tabby, but when i 'analyzed' the fur, I saw that the brown color is... not in the roots, exactly like the silvers ... but since she's brown and not black... she cannot be silver, can she?
I really don't understand, ....can you help me? Thanks

Hopefully one of our breeders on here will pop up & help you with this one,I have a brown tabby & I saw him right from a few days old onwards but I never looked that deep into his coat,in fact at that age the breeder wouldn't have let us hold him so don't know if perhaps at that young age the depth of colour isn't there,if she was older I would wonder if she was silver carrying tarnish but surely the breeder should know. Will be interesting to follow this one & if you have her pictures please,I love the mackerel pattern although only one of mine has got it...x

I'm no expert but could she have Fever coat? It can make a brown look silver. Eventually it clears and the kitten will go back to looking brown. Fever coat is usually caused by an extended fever of 104F+ in either the mother cat or her kittens. It may be only one kitty is affected, not necessarily all the litter. As long as the kitty is healthy (no FIV/FLV), the proper color should come in with the adult coat.

I'm not sure that I explained properly what I meant... that is, looking at her you can easily describe her as brown. The point is when I picked her up, I moved the fur and I saw the roots plain white. That's why I'm asking... she was really similar to the 'golden tabby' here (there's a picture in the link where we can see the roots) the only difference is that in the baby the roots were white, not yellow......

Don't know if this will help but my Buddy is a red with a few creamy bits (under chin, belly etc) but all his fur looks cream near his skin. I hadn't noticed this before, I only looked after reading your post. I will try and get a picture tomorrow.
