We got a comb with 2 different length teeth, interleaved. This worked pretty well on the tangles that Leo had on his tail from his time at the shelter. We were using a slicker brush which didn't work. His fur is a little on the course side, I don't know if that's better or worse for tangles. His tangles were partly caused by something called "stud tail". First we had to get the built up oils in his fur out with a couple of spot cleanings then we had to deal with the tangles.
