    Peculiar Teeth

Hank's coming up to his 6 month milestone very shortly and has his appointment already at the Vet's to be neutered in a couple of weeks but I'm thinking of taking him in sooner as I noticed a couple of days ago he has what I can only seem to describe as additional fangs.

It appears that he has an 'extra' set of the top two big canines growing alongside the ones that should be there, almost as though he's got adult teeth trying to push out baby teeth.

Just wondering if anyone else has spotted this before in cats, I never have and aren't even certain if cat's do have multiple 'sets' of teeth that grow through as they age like children do.

It doesn't appear to be causing any discomfort, he's the same big goofy red furball that likes to attack my ankles at every opportunity when he thinks I can't see him so I'm not overly worried but if anyone knows of this as a known condition which requires immediate attention from a vet then I'll get him there asap.

    Peculiar Teeth

Hi,it seems as if you could have answered your own question, I would say it is his adult canines have dropped in beside his baby teeth, happens a lot in kittens & puppies but it does make them look a bit strange, my vet always checks for this when we spay or castrate & he just whips the baby ones out so would think your vet would do the same, very often though even if left they do come out on their own at a later time.
I always think that if you could get them to eat a nice chewy caramel toffee it would do the job like it does for our crowns......

    Hi Dave,

I have gone through this condition with both my boys.... they should fall out in due time especially when they are crunching on harder kibbles. You should be careful though, as it may accidentally cause choking as I have experienced with Rocco. He spat out the teeth on the floor after that.

    All the best to Hank

When you see it first, it becomes frightening. But really it's just a change of teeth!

Thanks all, glad they will come then and won't cause him discomfort. As said I've had 3 other cats throughout my lifetime so far and known plenty of others but never actually seen this. :-)

Ours did this a few months ago, just as we were about to get her spayed she got an infection in teh gum, not sure whether one old one lingered, but her gum was red and brown and her breath stank like rotten flesh, by the time we took her to vets old tooth had already come out and she just had to have anti biotics

Just out of curiosity is there a particular age that this occurs around? Just curious.

Louie is about the same age & at the mo he has two large white ball things in his gum at the bottom front trying to push through. I will be happy when they have as he may stop breaking his whiskers then
