Hi Loisa.proper name for it is Pectus Excavatum ....! It is a deformity of the ribs & sternum
at birth & that means the chest is flat, some are not too bad, some quite severe & quite a few do die, because of the flat chest it can cause all types of problems including bad breathing. The ones that are not too bad can end up perfectly normal the ribs seem to come round back into shape,Pansy P is still quite flat, you can feel a dip where her sternum is & because she was quite bad some of her main organs are displaced further down into the abdomen. When we first had her we were not really expecting her to be with us as long as this, she had breathing problems as she grew because the organs were getting squashed, she used to get very choked up so I treated her as if she had cystic fibrosis, every day at least twice sometimes more I would pat her up & down her back until she coughed up any fluids ,I used to tell her she was a good girl if she had big coughs & brought it up,if she used to just do silly little noises I would stand there coughing & telling her that is what she had to do then pat away again until I got the big one,I done that daily for well over two years & she did improve a lot, now she hardly ever needs it but if she does she will come & pat me on the back of the knee & make little coughing noises & I just pick her up & off we go with the old routine, also her heart beat is a lot higher than normal, when she has her mad moments she will suddenly flop & her sides heave trying to get the air in but after a few minutes rest she is off again. In the early days I intended to keep her quiet but then I realised how stupid that was, quality is better than quantity & if she pops off having a mad moment I know that right up to that point she has had a happy fullfilled life. She is a real little trooper & I am really pleased that hubby overuled me when I first said no,I was being selfish & didn't intend to bond with her but by the time we got her home I knew if we had lost her that night I would have been heartbroken. What is really great though is the fact that when she is off colour big bruv Bruce just stays with her & won't leave her side, when everything is ok they end up having fistipaws.....
